"Want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. Want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales." - Albert Einstein

Organization:

Bookwallah's tactical mission is to collect and distribute children's storybooks, set up libraries, and spread the joy of reading to children of orphanages throughout the world. While improvement in literacy is a natural outcome, the strategic aim of Bookwallah is to spur the growth of true imagination – as a skill and basis for success. Where would we be without people like Albert Einstein or Steve Jobs? These children need to imagine how to get past some of the hardships experienced, move forward and change their own worlds.

In working with various kinds of non-profit organizations (large, small, healthcare, education, etc) SocialRaise gets asked about the return on investment of online fundraising. Our first answer is always, online fundraising is more than just a "donate here" button on your website. Real fundraising is the same in person, by phone/mail or online. You need to have a plan, engage your constituents and manage the relationship carefully. So, the short answer is yes, it is worth the effort, but only if you do it properly.

iscream4reading, a literacy focused fundraising organization has partnered with SocialRaise, a Chicago-based digital agency on a program that enables schools to focus their funding efforts on student learning. Schools are able to replace or augment their current fundraising efforts with a single program that inspires reading, while raising funds.

“After the financial success of this first year, and hearing about the staggering number of hours kids read over the summer, I can’t imagine our school will ever go back to the other fundraisers,” says Steven Slaughter, a Chicago Public School teacher.

Realizing my fridge had dwindled down to a half-full carton of skim milk and an empty Brita, I made an evening stroll to my local grocery store in downtown Chicago. While in the checkout lane, I noticed Patricia, the woman scanning my grocery items. I glanced down at her nametag and it read "Hi, I'm Patricia. Serving you since 1984."

Organization: The newly formed Haitian Amputee Mothers Alliance (HAMA) was created to help 60 mothers who have become amputees as a result of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti one year ago. HAMA is supported by the Village of Vision for Haiti Foundation/Foundation Enfant Jesus (VVHF). VVHF is a non-sectarian organization focused on addressing and solving key life sustaining problems that plague the people of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. VVHF runs a micro-community that includes an orphanage, a school, which also supports the local community and a medical clinic in addition to supporting the efforts of HAMA.
